What Are the Benefits of a Remote Workforce?

More and more companies are discovering the benefits of letting employees work from home- on at least some days a week. In many cases, they’re even hiring completely remote workforces- this survey found that 16% of global companies are now fully remote and 52% of employees around the world work from home at least one day a week. And this was before the pandemic.

Even once things return to normal, we can expect that many companies will continue letting their employees stay working from home- here’s why it is a good thing.

Helps to Keep Costs Down

Commercial premises can be expensive. This is particularly the case if you live in a busy town or city as rent prices can be sky high, and the bigger the premises, generally the more you’ll pay. But when you have a lot of people working for you, you have no choice but to hire the larger spaces so that everyone has space to sit and d their tasks. However when most of your staff work remotely, you can rent something smaller and therefore cheaper for those who need to come in to work. When you hire remote workers you won’t need to pay for their equipment either, they will already have computers and things they need to do their job (state what these include in the job description when you’re hiring) which saves you the cost of buying, maintaining and repairing them. You can also outsource tasks to other businesses who will have the knowledge, expertise and equipment on hand to perform the job you need. It could be anything from marketing to accounting to managed IT services.

Happier, Healthier and More Productive Staff

The health and happiness of your employees should be a high priority as a business owner, from both a profit and a moral point of view. Allowing people to work from home, even if it’s just for a few days a week can boost happiness- there’s no long commute, more flexibility and the comfort of their own home which some people much prefer. This is backed up with research which shows remote and home-based workers take less sick days than general employees, which helps with productivity.

The Best Employees and Talent, Not Limited to Physical Location

When you’re searching for employees to work in your business, you’re always going to be limited to the people who live nearby if you want them to come into a workplace. While some will move for work, most potential candidates are only going to apply for a job that they can physically get to each day so you’re limited by geography. When you allow people to work from home, you can hire from anywhere in the world which massively broadens your horizons and enables you to find workers that you wouldn’t have been able to employ any other way; you can choose the best talent for your business instead of being limited by a small local employment pool.
