Throughout the centuries, technology has changed such that the way we protect our bodies has also changed. Before when it was man and beast, and a horse suddenly threw you off it’s back, there was a way to try and land safely. The classic tuck and roll was something that cavalry soldiers had to get used to. It wasn’t easy but the science behind it was biomechanically sound.
By tucking in your limbs, you prevent what’s called ‘flailing injury’. However, now that we have swapped beasts for cars, we need to consider how we can protect our bodies in the event of a crash. The same principles do apply because you need to brace for impact in much the same way. However, there are also some changes you need to be aware of so you can stand the best chance of survival.
The Driver
The driver is perhaps in the most danger regarding a front end collision. This is because the steering wheel is in front of them which gives their body less room to move during an impact. This can cause a squeezing and or crushing effect which can damage your sternum and ribcage; not to mention your cranium. If you can see an accident about to occur to you and you have a few seconds to react, do these things. Get your thumbs out of the steering wheel. So many broken fingers, thumbs and hands result from keeping hold of the wheel during an impact. Get your feet off the pedals and put them closer to your body. This will prevent damage to your lower body from staying near or on the crumple zones. Put your head right back into the headrest with your arms in your lap. This is the best way to stay safe as the driver.
Backseat Passengers
For those in the backseats, the best way to brace is to put their head in their laps. Since there are not real headrests that are designed to stop the head moving from side to side in a lateral impact, the best thing to do is to lower your center of gravity. Hopefully, this will give your body the best chance of keeping its weight in a small area and also prevent you from receiving whiplash. It’s also in your best interest to make sure that your feet and legs are away from the front seats. This is so you don’t end up crushing your body if it violently moves forward.
Holding Those Responsible
Even after the event, you’re going to be dealing with a lot of pain if the impact is severe. Paying your healthcare bills is not going to be easy. Many people don’t know how to brace for the financial impact of a car crash, but if you speak with a specialist Car Accident Attorney, they can lessen the blow for you. They gather evidence of any personal injury due to negligent driving by the other party. This will help you pay for your healthcare bills if needed.
Bracing for impact should become muscle memory once you’ve replayed the scenario a few times in your mind. Keep your limbs as close to your body as possible.
