There are loads of ways to be healthy. In reality, healthiness comes down to a series of lifestyle choices that you make. You could choose to get up off the couch and go to the gym, or you could choose to carry on binging Netflix for the next fourteen hours.
Seeing as we’re still in the realm of new year’s resolutions, I thought I’d suggest a few healthy lifestyle changes to consider this year. You don’t have to try them, and you can give them a go temporarily to see how you like them.
Switch to a Vegetarian Diet
It’ll be a big change for some people, and I totally understand if you don’t want to do it. Lots of people are taking part in Veganuary, which is basically a chance to sample the vegan lifestyle for a bit. You don’t have to go to those extremes, but you could switch to a veggie diet. Vegetarian foods are actually more diverse than you think – and they’re tasty too. Switching to this diet can help lower your cholesterol, reduce blood pressure, and help you lose weight. Maybe give it a go for a month to see how your body responds.
Quit Drinking
I’m sure some of you are reading this while sipping a G&T and scoffing at the thought of life without alcohol. Well, maybe it’s time you cut back a little bit? After a heavy Christmas period, it’s good to have a few weeks where you don’t drink any alcohol. It’s not good for your health, and you don’t want to end up addicted to it. You don’t need to be on the verge of checking into an alcohol detox center to know that it’s time to cut down on your drink. If you drink every week, then it’s worth assessing your situation. Again, quit for a period, or quit for life – it’s up to you. All I’ll say is that there are clear health benefits that come with quitting alcohol.
Take up a Sport
Sports are super fun ways for you to stay fit and active. If you struggle to get to the gym, or you don’t know how to start your fitness journey, then a sport is the best place to begin. Look for sports clubs in your local area, and you can join a team or attend classes. Now, you have an excuse to go out and get fit. It’s an opportunity to meet new people with similar interests to you as well. Playing a sport will add more consistency to your fitness routine, which is just what a lot of us need. So, think about what sports you’d like to play, then go ahead and do it. Because I’m feeling generous, I’ll even allow yoga and pilates to be classified as sports!
You might not like the sound of some of these lifestyle changes, but they’re worth thinking about. As I mentioned before, you don’t necessarily have to make them permanent changes. There’s nothing wrong with switching things up and following a new diet for a month, or cutting back on alcohol. I just think that a couple of healthy lifestyle changes can be exactly what you need to hit the ground running this year.
