Commuting is one of the main things stopping people from going to the gym. Having to spend more than 40 minutes to go to your gym can be pretty annoying, and demotivating if you just came back from work.
Another thing that usually stops people from going to the gym is having to exercise surrounded by people, such is my case, as someone who is rather shy and reserved. That’s why I decided to invest a little money in making my home gym.
There are plenty of benefits if you decide to make your home gym, but the main ones are definitely:
- Not having to commute
- Not being surrounded by strangers probably watching you do an exercise or routine the wrong way
- Not having to pay a monthly fee
If you are someone who tries to remain consistent when it comes to training, this last one will be the most significant factor because of how much money you’ll be saving from a gym’s monthly fee.
But of course, there are some steps you have to follow before starting to build your gym, and we are here to help you out.
Consider the Space Before Anything Else
Do you have space in your home to even think about having a home gym? You’ll need space for your training gear to move around and to do specific training regimes that include movement. If you don’t have the space required to fit in your equipment, you should stick to going to regular gyms. Or, maybe, moving out to a place with the extra space.
The space you need for a home gym depends on the equipment you are going to buy. If you are planning to go heavy with the investment, you’ll need more space, but for a completely functional home gym, you’ll need just some squares to save up your barbells, dumbbells, weigh, and if you are into cardio, your treadmill. Here’s more info on the topic.
If you don’t know what to buy when it comes to equipment and gear, we’ve got you covered with a little list of potential gear for different types of training.
What Gear to Buy
Weighed Arm/Ankle bands: They are mainly used to add some weight to your body while doing exercises. Not recommended for aerobics, though, since they may cause some damage due to a possible muscle imbalance. They are a good investment if you don’t suffer from back or joint pain.
Exercise bands: They are great for people wanting to exercise at home since they require little to no space and have many different uses. You can use them for different workout routines that include most parts of your body. If you don’t know how to use them, you can do your research and will most likely find plenty of exercises and routines.
Weighs and barbells: Weights and barbells are a must-have if you want to build your gym. They require little space, too, so you won’t have to worry about it. The best part is that there are lots of barbells for home you can get along with weights out there. And you can use them for lots of exercises, too, mostly involving weightlifting.
Kettlebell: This one is a little ball with a handler you can use for exercises requiring a weight for both hands, useful for some types of exercises that couldn’t be done with regular weighs.
Treadmill: A treadmill is an excellent choice if you are into running. For me, this was my best purchase without a doubt. Not having to go outside with the scorching sun or the annoying rain, being able to run whenever I want is great.
A yoga mat: a cushioned yoga mat is a good option for stretching, and if you are into yoga, this will surely come in handy.

Some people get tired of doing the same thing over and over again over the weeks. In that case, you can buy exercise dices to add some luck to your exercise routines. They feature workout routines with time and reps and are a surprisingly good option to keep your work routines fresh and exciting.
Do you have the space for a home gym? Start making a budget! Remember, you don’t have to buy everything right away, start little by little until you have what you need, and remember, keep consistent on those workouts, you won’t have excuses now!
